Expansion to Barcelona Airport with the aim of absorbing the repeated increases in traffic, doubling its capacity by expanding the existing infrastructure with new terminals, both regional and international, new car parks, the construction of a third runway (2650m long by 75m wide) and also of a new passenger terminal between runways (T1), with 525,000m2 of gross floor area.

The Plan also included the improvement of metropolitan and regional accessibility to the airport with the extension of the Metro and the construction of a new branch of the Regional Rail Network, as well as the promotion of an Airport City of over 300 hectares designed for, amongst others, the Cargo Centre (CargoParc), Air Park (AeroParc) and Airport Services Park (ServiParc). The Plan involves 1,500ha, with a total investment of  €2,300 million.

To be able to implement the ambitious program of investment and management complexity that was the Barcelona Plan, AENA (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation Office) created the Executive Office for Planning and Development at Barcelona Airport (OEPD) in 1999, contracting Pla Barcelona, a Joint Venture comprising ALG and PROJECTS & FACILITIES MANAGEMENT, to act as a management/operational structure for the strategic advisory services and as management support (Project Management Office).

PROJECTS handed the project to a multidisciplinary team which, alongside professionals from AENA, formed the project management team that was able to carry out this project so successfully and has delivered a new Barcelona airport ready to receive and process over 50 million passengers.
